How To Improve Firestick Performance – 8 Quick Tricks

amazon fire tv stick

The Amazon Fire Stick is an amazing streaming device for any day to day user that has cut their cable. It is very easy to set up and use and has become one of the most popular devices for streaming. Like any device you purchase these days there are always some downsides. Some of the Amazon fire tv sticks cons are; low ram, small internal storage and no way to add external storage to your device.

As the device ages and you continue to install and use more apps the firestick can start to slow down. This can be bothersome and today I have 8 tricks on how to improve firestick performance. Let’s get to it!

How To Improve Firestick Performance

    1. Update Your Firestick –

Keeping up to date with device software updates is very important for any device. This includes the amazon firestick! Amazon periodically rolls out new updates and features for their fire tv devices which improve user experience and also to keep your device secure. So if your firestick is still using old software I recommend updating it to see if it fixes your problems.

    2. Uninstall Unused Apps –

Since the Amazon Firestick uses a forked version of Android TV and Android Tv is based on the OS Android, apps work the same way as they do on your phone. Some run in the background tracking your location and other data such as internet browsing etc. As well as regular apps doing this you can definitely bet on third party unauthorized apps doing this as well. So if you have any piracy apps installed it may be best to delete them. Try uninstalling all applications you don’t use to speed up your device!

    3.  Using OEM Power Cord And Adaptor-
Using the charger and power adaptor that was manufactured specifically for your device is the best way to ensure reliable performance from your firestick. If you’re an iPhone owner you will know exactly what I am talking about. Third-party chargers and power adapters are inferior in comparison to their OEM counterparts.  Obviously this isn’t always an option since power cords can be misplaced or broken fairly easily. Just keep in mind if you are using a third-party charger this could be the cause of your amazon firestick’s problems.
    4. Stopping Unused Apps-

Some apps you can’t uninstall that come pre-installed on your device. These apps often run in the background and bog down your device. You may not be able to uninstall them but you can force them to stop which means the device won’t allow them to operate.
Here is how to force stop unused apps  :
Hold down the Home button, Select Settings / Applications / Manage Installed Applications, Select the app you want to force stop, Select Force stop.

    5. Disable Unused Services –

The Amazon Firestick comes with services always running. Depending on which service it is you may not be using them. There is no point in letting your device use up resources for something you aren’t using. Let me walk you through how to disable some.

      Disable Prime Photos

      • Hold down the Home button
      • Select Settings / Applications / Prime Photos
      • Turn off Allow Guest Connections
      • Turn off Access Prime Photos

      Disable Whispersync

      • Hold down the Home button
      • Select Settings / Applications /GameCircle
      • Turn off Share your GameCircle nickname
      • Turn off Whispersync for games
    6. Clearing An Apps Cache

If your speed issues pertain to a certain app such as Kodi it may be time to clear the cache. The cache of applications grows bigger and bigger as you use them, this is because the app is saving data. To clear an application cache it’s similar to android.

      • Hold down the Home button
      • Select Settings / Applications / Manage Installed Applications
      • Select the app you want to clear the cache in
      • Select clear cache
    7. Restarting Your Device

Sometimes all your device needs is a good restart. Restarting your device will close all applications and freshly boot back up in a clean state. This solution also works for computers and smartphones!

    8. Factory Resetting Your Device

This is a last-ditch effort. If you’ve tried everything in this guide you may have to factory reset your device. Unfortunately, this means you will lose all your data, apps, etc. This is can be a pain in the butt and I only recommend this if you’ve tried everything else in this guide and it didn’t work.
