How To Update Kodi On Android Tv Box
Usually updating Kodi on any device is a fairly painless process. Although on Android Boxes it could be a different story. Depending on what version of android your android tv box is running will ultimately determine what version of Kodi you are allowed to run. Unfortunately this means if your android box is an older model there is no way to update to the latest version of Kodi.
Finding out the model of device could help you in this situation by searching online for a firmware update. Also some android boxes come with OTA update apps installed on the home screen of the device and you can always check there and see if your device has any new updates available.
Updating Kodi isn’t exactly necessary depending on what version of Kodi you are running. A lot of addons are compatible with older versions of Kodi but old addons aren’t compatible with the new versions of Kodi. If you are running an really old version of Kodi though you wouldn’t likely be able to use any of the new addons. This is why it’s important to be able to update Kodi on your android box so it doesn’t become a useless paperweight.
How Do I Know What Version Of Kodi I’m on?
Finding this information is fairly easy to do and will tell you whether or not you actually need to update your Kodi device. You can find this information in your settings menu in Kodi.
- Open Kodi on your device
- Go to the settings menu
- Now go to the system information menu
- Down at the bottom the screen it should tell you the build of your Kodi, mine is 18.5. (The latest version)
Now let’s pretend that I’ve discovered my Kodi device is outdated and I would like to update it. There is a few more things I have to find out about about my device because it may not be able to run the latest version of Kodi.
Kodi 17 and higher require an android version of 5.0. This means that if you have Kodi 16 and are on a device with an android version below 5.0 there isn’t a way to update to the latest version of Kodi.
How Do I Find Out What Android Version I’m Running?
Simply enough I’m going to base this text tutorial off my samsung galaxy s10 but it should still apply to other android devices.
- Turn on your android device
- Go to the settings menu on your device.
- Now scroll all the way to the bottom of your menu options in settings
- select about device
- Select software information
- Now you should see whatever version of android you are running.
Now that you know what version of android you are running you can determine whether or not you can update to the latest version of Kodi. Just remember that anything less than 5.0 means you will not be able to upgrade and will be stuck on kodi 16 or below.
Fortunately the majority of android boxes out today have kept up with the times and come with a version equal to or higher then android 5.0. So if you bought an android box recently, say in the last year or two you are most likely OK.

How To Update Kodi 16 On Android box
If your android box is running Kodi 16 you may not be able to update to the latest version of Kodi. You will want to follow the steps I’ve written earlier to find out what android version your box is running. In alternative would be to open the google play store and search for Kodi. When you select to update the app you will be prompted telling you that your device isn’t capable of running the latest stable version of Kodi.
Can You Downgrade From The Latest Version
Maybe you don’t like the new version of Kodi for whatever reason. You can always downgrade back to the other version you were on by downloading and reinstalling that version of Kodi. The only issue here is if you didn’t backup your Kodi files before updating then you will be in for some trouble. This is because you will have to completely uninstall Kodi to downgrade and then install from the older APK file, leaving you with a freshly installed version of Kodi.
I wouldn’t recommend downgrading Kodi because the latest version is the most stable and reliable version out to date. If you don’t like the look of the new version of Kodi you can always change the skin to something more to your tastes. Users do this all the time. Just remember if you are going to downgrade your Kodi device to make sure you have a backup of your Kodi files so you don’t have to reinstall all your favorite addons and fix all your tweaked preferences.
